Shaindy Perl

I spent 20 years writing people’s stories.
Now I help you create your own.

My Work

Over the course of my writing career, I interviewed hundreds of people, including some who had experienced intense trauma and grief. Hearing their stories and giving them a voice was incredibly meaningful for me. After two decades as a writer, I decided to pursue my lifelong dream of becoming a social worker. In my work as a therapist, I still hear people’s stories, but now I help them find their own voice, heal old wounds, improve daily functioning, and overcome traumas and other challenges. As they develop new skills and a greater sense of self, they build new chapters in their life and feel empowered to write their own stories.

My Training

I graduated with honors from Yeshiva University’s Wurzweiler School of Social Work, as part of the Sara Schenirer cohort. I spent my first-year internship at Lexington Center for Recovery in Airmont, New York, providing individual therapy and co-facilitating groups for individuals dealing with alcohol, drug, and gambling addictions. I spent my second-year internship at Achieve Behavioral Health in Monsey, New York, and continued working there after the end of my internship. I work with individuals, couples, and groups, helping clients struggling with anxiety, OCD, marital difficulties, substance use and other addictions, trauma, and other challenges.

My Approach

I use a humanistic, person-centered approach and am guided by my passionate belief in the inherent value and immense potential of every individual. I am attracted to theories and modalities that support this perspective, including psychodynamic psychotherapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), and Internal Family Systems (IFS). When appropriate, I use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) to help clients actualize their therapeutic goals.
